Residents Angry Over Strip Club Billboard

Posted on 21 October 2010 by johnd

Well, nobody ever said you can please everyone – try telling patrons of a strip club that.

The mayor of Jackson, MS is furious over a billboard recently emerging in the city, as are many of the citizens of the state’s capital city.

The billboard advertises for Danny’s Downtown strip club at 995 S West St. The image is a bikini-clad woman grabbing a stripper pole, an image which is innocuous enough. The caption is what has people red in the face: “Strippers love to climb our pole.”

Nobody said strip clubs were places of philosophy, either.

Needless to say the mayor has asked the billboard company to remove the sign. The club’s owner hasn’t responded to requests for comments, either.

Local Town Allows Beer Sales On Sunday

Posted on 20 October 2010 by johnd

Another local town will be allowed  to sell beer and wine on Sunday, according to a vote by the city of Verona’s aldermen.

The vote narrowly passed by a 3-2 margin, regardless, the window of opportunity for Verona residents to buy alcohol is open even further. Prior to the vote, residents could buy beer and wine Monday through Saturday. The new amendment allows beer and wine to be sold on Sunday, but a hurdle in the  form of a possible mayor veto must be cleared.

Ten days is the allotted time the mayor has to decide whether or not to veto the amendment.

Man Ignores Burn Ban, Starts Wildfire

Posted on 18 October 2010 by johnd

A man burning leaves in Lee County was the culprit for a wildfire that burned dozens of acres Sunday. Two firefighters had to be treated for smoke inhalation, otherwise there were no injuries to report.

The city had a burn ban in effect, but this man obviously wasn’t aware of that. Firemen from a good number of departments were called to work on the blaze off of Pontocola Road. Officials say that if the wind would have been blowing that day, the fire would have gotten out of control.

The man was cited and faces possible fines for his lapse in judgment. Remember, during a burn ban, you can’t burn anything. At all. Glad we’re clear on that one.

Man Tries to Outrun Train, Gets Pummeled

Posted on 13 October 2010 by johnd

Tupelo motorists are in a frustrated clamor over a train that is blocking many streets in the area. Did it break down? Is it stopping to see the sights?

No – a local man, in lieu of waiting for the train to come through, tried to outrun it across the tracks. He failed.

In the process of failing, the man received a broken leg, but nothing life threatening. Roads are blocked off from Jefferson westward to Lumpkin St. They separated the train to keep Crosstown open, and an investigation is pending – if there’s anything to investigate.

Sixth Case of West Nile Virus Found in Mississippi

Posted on 11 October 2010 by johnd

Everybody panic – a case of West Nile virus has arisen in Mississippi!

Oh, sit down. The case that was found occurred in an adult in Leflore County. That brings the state total to six, with three of those in Leflore County alone.

So, I guess you could panic if you live in Leflore county. I’m kidding, of course.

How do you know if you have West Nile? According to the CDC, “about one in 150 people infected with WNV will develop severe illness. The severe symptoms can include high fever, headache, neck stiffness, stupor, disorientation, coma, tremors, convulsions, muscle weakness, vision loss, numbness and paralysis. These symptoms may last several weeks, and neurological effects may be permanent.”

Up to 20 percent of people, once again according to the trusty CDC, “have symptoms such as fever, headache, and body aches, nausea, vomiting, and sometimes swollen lymph glands or a skin rash on the chest, stomach and back. Symptoms can last for as short as a few days, though even healthy people have become sick for several weeks.”

About 80 percent of people have no symptoms at all.

Put on your repellent and light colored clothes, and go have fun out there!

Log Truck Crashes on Highway 45, Jams Traffic

Posted on 09 October 2010 by johnd

A truck driver’s mistake caused traffic headaches on Highway 45 in Tupelo.

The driver of a truck carrying large  logs was speeding around the Highway 78 exit ramp when he managed to lose control of the truck – and the logs. The logs spilled all over the roadway, blocking off traffic and angering many who had better things to do.

An hour passed before the mess was cleaned up and the driver counted his blessings, exiting the scene with only minor cuts.

What a logjam!

Lawyer Tossed in Jail For Not Reciting Pledge of Allegiance

Posted on 07 October 2010 by johnd

In America, land of the free, home of the brave, where you have the freedom to hold your own convictions, practice your own religion and live your own life, sometimes you encounter denials and suppressions of said freedoms that make you scratch your head.

This sentiment holds true in the case of Tupelo attorney Danny Lampley.

Lampley was preparing for an upcoming trial when people in the courtroom were asked to recite the Pledge of Allegiance. When he refused, the judge held him in contempt of court and he was subsequently jailed.

WTVA Tupelo reports that the court documents say he outright refused to say it. However, Lampley says that they were told to stand for the pledge – not to recite it. He did stand – out of respect for the entering judge.

The judge noticed that Lampley didn’t recite the Pledge, and asked him to do so. Lampley refused, and that’s pretty much where the story ends. The lawyer – who was released from jail at around 2:30 PM – hopes to talk with the judge, Talmadge Littlejohn, about the matter.

This apparently isn’t the first time this particular judge has had it in for Lampley – he had him removed from a courtroom in Corinth for the same thing.

The judge simply stated to questions concerning the matter that “the documents speak for themselves.”

Anna McCoy’s Alleged Killer Arrested

Posted on 05 October 2010 by johnd

The assailant of a 20 year old Saltillo woman has finally been identified.

Anna Catherine McCoy was found dead with bullet wounds at a home on Willoughby Oaks Drive in Saltillo this past April – ostensibly, the home of her ex-boyfriend. The murder weapon, a .40 caliber handgun, was found at the scene.

Authorities today have charged Thomas Ward with the depraved heart murder of McCoy. Depraved heart murder is a term used for a criminal act that shows a callous disregard for human life and results in death, in case you didn’t know. In essence, it’s second degree murder.

The news couldn’t be worse for Thomas Ward – McCoy’s father is a retired Tupelo police officer. Ward is currently rotting away at the Lee County Adult Detention Center, and no further details are available at this time.
