The assailant of a 20 year old Saltillo woman has finally been identified.

Anna Catherine McCoy was found dead with bullet wounds at a home on Willoughby Oaks Drive in Saltillo this past April – ostensibly, the home of her ex-boyfriend. The murder weapon, a .40 caliber handgun, was found at the scene.

Authorities today have charged Thomas Ward with the depraved heart murder of McCoy. Depraved heart murder is a term used for a criminal act that shows a callous disregard for human life and results in death, in case you didn’t know. In essence, it’s second degree murder.

The news couldn’t be worse for Thomas Ward – McCoy’s father is a retired Tupelo police officer. Ward is currently rotting away at the Lee County Adult Detention Center, and no further details are available at this time.

Twenty-three year old Thomas Jacob Scott of Plantersville is behind bars on a felony charge of eluding police after driving through a security checkpoint.

Police report that the drunken man sped through the checkpoint at the intersection of Main and Post street early Saturday, swiping a police car and narrowly missing other cars.

Authorities tailed him to his home, where he was pretending to be asleep.

Scott is also being charged with misdemeanors of DUI, resisting arrest and reckless driving.
