"Ruling Flies In The Face Of Our Democratic Values"

STATEMENT FROM NORTHERN PLAINS ON WTO DECISION AGAINST COUNTRY OF ORIGIN LABELING

“The ruling against COOL (Country of Origin Labeling) by the WTO today flies in the face of our democratic values,” said Steve Charter,
Chair of Northern Plains Resource Council and a Bull Mountain rancher. “Someone not even in this country is allowed to tell us what we 2840can and can’t do. Americans should be able to know where their beef comes from, and producers should have the choice to advertise their products as American beef.

“This is a good example of how these free trade agreements thwart our sovereignty and democracy. Twenty years ago, the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA) started us down the path of corporate rule. America’s rights as a sovereign nation have become subordinate to the rights of corporations.

“The WTO ruling is just another case of a U.S. trade pact where democracy is not working.”
