Brenneke’s Red Magic Sabot is a Slug for the Ages
When German hunter and inventor Wilhelm Brenneke created the modern shotgun slug in 1898, it was the culmination of his lifelong quest for a projectile that would deliver the absolute maximum in power and humanely kill an animal on contact. More than 100 years later, Brenneke’s great-grandson, Dr. Peter Mank, used the same exacting standards in creating the industry’s most lethal 12-gauge saboted slug, the Red Magic™ Sabot.
That’s good news for shotgun hunters who want to stop a deer in its tracks.
“While existing sabot designs were capable of exceptional accuracy in a shotgun barrel, that came at a price: vastly reduced power, penetration, and energy transfer to the target compared to a Brenneke slug,” said Mank, now Brenneke’s director. “We would not introduce a sabot until we were confident that it would perform just as reliably and accurately as our traditional slugs.”
Success couldn’t be sweeter for the storied ammunition manufacturer, who had to overcome obstacles presented by the inherent design of a sabot. It took years of research to find the perfect balance of a projectile with sufficient weight and hardness that would carry forward from its plastic casing and maintain tremendous energy, maximum velocity and deadly accuracy.
It was neither simple nor easy.
A sabot consists of a hard metal projectile that’s encased in a plastic sleeve. When fired from a shotgun, the sleeve opens at the front and falls away, freeing the projectile to speed downrange toward its target. Because the casing is all that comes into contact with the barrel, the saboted slug typically flies faster and sometimes with better accuracy than a traditional slug.
A traditional slug utilizes virtually all of a 12-gauge barrel’s 0.73-inch diameter. And because a sabot’s outer casing displaces up to 30 percent of a barrel, a much smaller — and lighter – projectile design is necessary. In rifle terms, it would be similar to decreasing a 30-caliber bullet to the size of a .22-caliber round.
The smaller the projectile, the less frontal area there is to impact a targeted animal, and the less mass and weight there is to create energy. That’s why one of Brenneke’s goals was to deliver a projectile with the largest frontal area, weight and mass possible. Brenneke’s designed the Red Magic with a projectile whose frontal area is 58 percent larger than most competing 12-gauge sabots. That’s a cartridge with the energy to make humane kills.
Brenneke’s Red Magic Sabot is made of lead/antimony alloys, tested to the optimal hardness that allows for unfettered flight, superb penetration and reliable, destructive results downrange. The 2-3/4-inch version propels a one-ounce projectile to 1,584 feet per second at the muzzle and delivers 2,443 foot pounds of energy. The 3-inch Red Magic departs the muzzle at a blazing 1,756 feet per second, generating a whopping 3,000 foot pounds of energy.
Red Magic performance is superb in both rifled and smoothbore shotgun barrels, with any choke, and it has an extremely flat trajectory to 100 yards.
